JV and all the ORBX team, thank you for keeping us in the loop. I like the direction you are taking and will be an avid supporter of your projects as long as you continue to make them. They just keep getting better and better.

Sure hope we see some more airstrips ramping up in the PFJ area now given this announcement though. 10 airstrips in the PNW area and only a couple "planned" for PFJ so far is a bit of a shame given the beauty of that area and it's potential for the FTX treatment. Will NRM and CRM remain relatively untouched as well?

If more folks lived out in those areas and had access to photos then there could be more airstrips. I'd love to do an NRM or PFJ airfield but nobody lives out there. All the airfields are pretty much clustered around major cities

Airports: W52 Goheen, 0S9 Jefferson Co., 2W3 Swanson, KWYS West Yellowstone, 65S Bonners Ferry, PAYA Yakutat, PAHO Homer

We have four airfields planned for PFJ and one for NRM at this stage. You need to understand that getting imagery for Canada is almost impossible. If it exists at all, it's horrendously expensive. I could tell you what we've spent on the PAKT Kethikan imagery alone, but you would die from the shock.

Please understand, we're not a large company and we're doing the best we can given our staff and resources. We fully intend to populate our new regions with airports but if you follow our history you'll find there is a lag behind releases of regions to the release of airports.

One of the coolest updates I have heard from an FS developer. YBBN Cityscapes, YMML v2.5, 1WA6 (THE TAXIWAYS ARE AMAZING!), OS9, Busselton PeopleFlow to name a few are what I have my eyes on!

Really cannot wait, John + team. Cannot wait to see how good NRM + YPMQ are when they arrive on dvd in 2 weeks from PCAviator (combined shipping, and YPMQ is pre-pay so I decided to buy now and get it later)... again cannot wait!

It's going well. Most of the modeling is done. Tim, Graham and I will complete it before Christmas, that's a promise :)

I mostly fly low and slow so the focus on GA airports sits fine with me. I do a bit of flying with the airliners, and definitely plan to do more when the PMDG 737 is released, but I understand that it's difficult to get the level of detail Orbx demands of its products into the big airports without destroying frame rates. Plus I love how frequently you guys release smaller airports.

The list of upcoming airports is very impressive too. Thanks for the update, John.

I was looking forward to Portland but I fully understand your reasons. Right now I finished my fight against Brisbane and now have settings to run it in a satisfiing way (all other airports run great even on much higher settings). Dont get me wrong. I wouldnt have spend the time benchmarking it if it wouldnt be worth to me. But I spend more time on smaller strips. Sometimes when flying on high altitude routes I nearly feel ashamed because I spent my time on an altitude where I cant enjoy the details ;)
I dont care if you stop making big airports as long as you stick to your outstanding support and supreme quality (not to mention the low prizes).

Yeah really like the approach to small airports. The immense activity at large airports is simply too much for most computers to handle. I even get CTDs when I fly near KSEA...think it might be MyTraffic. Just the Orbx regional enhancment alone makes VFR flying such an enjoyable experience. Sure can't wait to fly over NCA wine country that actually looks like wine country...not the default scrubby desert. Gonna really try to get over to Sonoma this week and get those hangar shots for Neil.

JV, I think your decision is 100% on the money as they say! It's always refreshing when I jump back into my Lancair at KORS and see the jump in performance after having been flying at some of the large Aus airports in my iFLY 737! Your continued involvement with your loyal customers/supporters will always be appreciated. Your current list of projects is very exciting and I can't wait to see what other surprises you have up your sleeve! All the best and thanks for keeping us all informed ;)

Thank you John for this update! I really like the direction ORBX is going!

What makes me wonder is that nobody has reacted to the following so far:

Yes, Bill made a start on KPDX and even has a rudimentary ground photoreal in place and also has a bunch of photos, but the honest truth is that his heart is not in big projects; he loves making $100 hamburger strips so he's focusing on exciting new fields on both the USA West and East Coasts. (Yes, I did mention USA east coast so look for an announcement about that soon)

ORBX going East Coast! For me this part of the announcement is a sensational surprise!

  Cheers, Wolfgang

Thanks for the update.

Smaller fields equals regular releases equals better cash flow for a small company equals more smaller fields .... and so the process continues.

I will be lokking forward to Kiwiland in particular and whilst I am a parochial follower of the OZ scene I do have the three released regions in the US and have no doubt that my appetite will be whetted as releases come and go.

OK, back to the JS41 for some more circuits.

Great update John, thank you. I have been looking forward to KPDX cause it is one of my favourite tubeliner hubs in the US. Posted Image Hope that the payware fs9 version will be updated to FSX now? Maybee if they see this post. Anyway, I hope you keep giving the airports within the regions, a little extra AG etc. You know, the Orbx touch. Just think about landing at KDEN when that region is done. Cheers Mike

Thanks for the update John.

I believe you are leading ORBX in the right direction with this strategy. There are many many simmers out there like myself who only have time in the evening for a short hop or two, and the smaller ORBX airports together with the wonderful region packs are ideal for this. When time permits for a longer stint in the iFly 737 then I can always fly to YBBN, YMML etc. The bigger airports certainly offer great eye candy, but I for one am really happy with the high quality of the smaller fields at which ORBX excel.

Many thanks and here's to a bright ORBX future!

Thanks for the extremely comprehensive update JV, great to see what you guys are planning. There's some amazing looking stuff there

Gotta say though, it's a bit of a mixed bag of feelings for me. Now, I want to make it clear that I'm not criticising your decisions here, they make perfect business sense. But, even after all the times it's been on again/off again, I was still really hoping to see Perth done one day. I know you think I'm overly parochial about it, and maybe so - we've had this discussion before - but everyone on here wants to see their hometown done... just reading the General Discussion Forums daily shows people sticking in suggestions for one airfield or another - so please forgive me that conceit. I'm extremely grateful for the coverage in Australia so far, it is so good to be able to fly any place in the whole country and expect reasonably good scenery (well, excellent for the most part.) However, as far as airports go, the entire country west of the Great Dividing Range may as well not exist. It's hard to do a flight from say Coff's Harbour out to Tamworth and be stunned by the quality of the airports, and then try a flight from Kalgoorlie to Perth and try to avoid looking at the airport scenery. The quality of the FTX default airports in Australia is nowhere near as good as the FTX default airports in PNW for instance. The OZx guys provide great airfield coverage of much of Australia, but lets face it - nothing beats the ORBX regional airports, they are the best. So, yeah, a bit disappointed in that regard, but I can also see it from the flipside - flying in West Oz is not the visual feast it may be in other areas, not everyone (well if I'm gonna continue to be honest, probably only a bloody small number of us!! :P) wants to spend all their time flying over endless tracts of more or less flat SW wheatbelt or semi arid pastoral country and you've already stated the team's preference for catering to the "Low'n'slow GA crowd"

This leads me to an opinion I've been suppressing for a while now... I think that you guys may be spreading yourselves a bit thin. ORBX's region coverage is expanding rapidly, with NZ South and North Islands, CRM and North Cal in the US and now the alluded to East Coast expansion. So far, all the NA airports have been restricted to PNW (I think, correct me if I'm wrong) so you already have two empty shells waiting to be filled, in PFJ and NRM. How are you going to go about filling those with quality payware airfields, let alone the new regions? You've already stated many times that the team only does projects that they are passionate about, which is a great thing - it results in the superior quality addons we expect from ORBX - but so far that passion has been pretty squarely focused on the East Coast of Australia, and the Pacific Northwest of the US. I feel for the guys in Canada who's dreams have probably just been shattered by the realisation that the inaccessibility of high quality PR data is going to strongly restrict what airfields get done in PFJ and NRM. I fully understand the restrictions you labour under there - I started out my career out of Uni working in the relatively new field of Geographical Information Systems (oh how I often wish I'd stuck with that...).

Please take this in the spirit which it's offered, free of spite or criticism of the ORBX team, many of you whom I've learned to greatly respect over the past year or so. I think though, that many people in your market over the coming year or so are going to become increasingly impatient to see the same level of coverage in their own regions that already exist and continue to grow in PNW and Eastern Australia and I don't envy you the position of having to constantly justify your development decisions. You can't, after all, please everyone all of the time - and I expect I'm going to be one of the ones forever clinging onto some obscure hope that one day maybe - just maybe - my home city will get painted with the ORBX magic brush. In the meantime however, I intend on continuing my explorations of your fantastic and increasingly amazing scenery and you can count on me to continue sharing my visual impressions of what I find... even if it means I have to do more flying on the East Coast or over in the US :)

Well, enough rambling from me. Cliffnotes version - love your work, will continue to do so. Think you are going to find the job of keeping your customer base happy by expanding regions without fleshing them out with good payware fields harder and harder. I respect and appreciate your honesty in your approach to updating us supporters.

Cheers John and the rest of the ORBX team.

Oh yes - and then there's MS Flight... ?? :P

Hi John,

Thanx for the update and I think you've won more people over, just letting us in on what's going on, a good move I'm sure.

You as the CEO have the responsibility of spending the coffers, so the decisions lie with you and you are where the buck stops.

For some, they will be unhappy and other pleased, but overall, we are still fortunate to have so much talent in our own Country, showing the world how it's done.

The importation of Russ is a stunning move (hope he's not coming by boat!) and he's a very valuable asset in your organisation.

My only gripe is that I'm spending my kids inheritance at the moment, building a full sized 737-800 cockpit in the front room of my house to fly the FTX airports of the east coast of Australia, so I was kinda hoping that we might have seen Kingsford Smith as the final jewel in the East Coast crown, but alas that is not to be so.

If I had the talents, I'd have a go myself, but my hours are pretty booked till I'm 95, so I'll pass on it.

Anyhow, keep up the great work, I think you guys have finally made a silk purse out of a sow's ear and I thank you all for it, profusely....
