Living History. Post war, all international air passengers arrived into Melbourne via Essendon Airport. It's where the Beatles landed in June 1964, and in 1971 it become the city's secondary airport when the new YMML Tullamarine Airport opened. Martin Henare (YMML/YBBN) is the talented developer who has produced a superb tribute to this iconic airport which has undergone a radical transformation in recent years. Looks great, what sort of a performance hit can I expect given the proximity to YMML?

Yes I too wonder what kind of hit this will take with YMML? WOuld like to buy but would hate to render both YMML and YMEN useless...

I have spent a lot of time at the real YMEN, mainly in the shopping centres, but also in a few of the hangars including the Air Ambulance and RFDS hangars. I have also driven past the airport hundreds if not thousands of times on the Tullamarine Fwy either in a car or on a bus. In fact I was catching a bus not so long ago, and every day it would go through the shopping centre with JB Hi Fi etc. I also live within close walking distance to the airport, and my house is almost directly underneath the short approach flight path for the airport. I used to take pictures of planes landing from the small paddock with one tree at the start of RWY 27. I have to admit I was actually very excited when I heard of the YMEN release from ORBX, as I thought it might include my house. Although it doesn't include my house, I am blown away at the level of detail that you guys have accomplished. EVERYTHING in the ORBX scenery looks identical to the real thing. I was particularly impressed with the AI traffic, and this for me is what really adds to the realism. Now when I'm parked or taxiing at Essendon I'm right next to the Commander I see buzzing around doing approaches and touch and gos in the real world, or taxiing behind one of the King Air Air Ambulances that takes off or lands any time of the day or night. My TWO favourite airports are now YMML and YMEN. So thanks ORBX for another excellent job.

Ok chaps, for those that are not sure about performance, as I own both Orbx YMML and YMEN ( I also have Orbx YMAV and YMMB ), I can tell you that my experience with them is excellent given that my computer specs are quite old by todays standards --> My Specs: Q6600 @ 3Ghz (std is 2.4Ghz), GF9600GT with 512Mb RAM, 4Gb of DDR2 @ 800Mhz, Win7 64Bit. etc, etc.

Now I am not saying that I get a Gazzillion FPS out of this setup, but by my following the settings guide that comes with most, if not all of Orbx software, I have a reasonably smooth flying experience. I do get the occasional tile-loading lag, which creates black areas while there is a very short pause while the scenery tiles load. I think that's from only having a 512Mb GFX card - I would like one with 1Gb.

I can fly the default Robbie in and out of these two airports with no handling problems at all, and of course the default C172 is no hasstle. I also fly the PMDGJ41 in and out of Essendon, but sometimes I do get the external GFX problem with that aircraft - again the lack of GFX RAM so I'm told.

Well, I hope that helps you chaps decide in favour of Orbx-YMEN, as you are missing a real treat if you dont.
