We've decided to heed customer feedback, and in a similar vein to how Ultimate Terrain X can disable its night lighting effects, we have tested some simple ways to disable the FTX lights and found substantial performance gains in city and urban areas, particularly places like Seattle, Portland, Vancouver, Sydney and Melbourne.
We always knew that the FTX lights took a hit on FPS, but due to the way lights are implemented in the FSX code the light effect is polled for by the engine even during the day even when it is not used which incurs a needless performance hit during daytime flying.
So today we're releasing two very simple apps called FTX Day and FTX Night. Their usage is very straight forward:
- If you are mainly flying during the daytime, run the FTX Day app and the lightpoles and effects will be switched off
- If you are flying at dusk/night/dawn, run the FTX Night app and the lightpoles and effects will be switched back on
When you run the installer, you'll see two icons on your desktop:
Just click the icon for the mode you want to use before starting FSX and you're all set. Note you can run it/change it while FSX is running, you just have to refresh scenery library for the effect to occur - Menu tab > World > Scenery library > press OK
In some cases, using DAY mode can more than double your FPS in urban/city areas.
Here are some comparison screenshots over Seattle and Melbourne. The first is with NIGHT mode, the second with DAY mode:

You can grab the beta installer from here - http://myftx.com/FTX...DAYNIGHT100.zip
We will look at integrating this into FTX Central soon.
Ooops! Apologies for all the replies which have been nuked. Tim merged two topics and somehow the forum lost everything. I've reposted this original topic now.
