Thank you for a very well detailed Update!!!
I was glued to my chair reading it.

the only other FSX Product vendor that I ever encountered that delivers Comprehensive To Be Release Product Updates, are PMDG.
this is a Very Positive Feedback on Orbx from my side.

Long live the FTX!

Thank you for taking the time to explain the logical approach it takes and the technical challenges that must be overcome to bring a product like this to market for the FSX platform.  I had no idea of the kinds of limitations you have to work with/over/around to implement this software, but as an R&D professional and manager for some 20 years I can sympathize with the task of designing for a platform with so many limitations and compromises, and I applaud you and your company's obvious commitments to only releasing the highest quality products.

As you can see from my signature, I have purchased more than a few Orbx packages.  I can tell you that FSX would have been long ago unstalled from my computer and relegated to the dust bin without the Orbx packages breathing new life into this sim.  As it stands now, I honestly ONLY fly in regions where I have an Orbx product installed- the rest of the FSX world looks dull, flat, depressing and frankly very "2008" without Orbx FTX.  It is remarkable that you can take aging and, by all accounts, broken source FSX code and engineer what looks and performs like a totally new simulator.  Your products continue to increase not only the level of detail and realism that is available but you do it in a way that actually improves performance at the same time.

Part of the reason I am willing to invest in Orbx products is that they "just work."  There are high profile examples in the news these days of very large software conglomerates who ignore the basic contract that when people pay money for a product, that product needs to function properly "out of the box" (I won't name names, but one of them has an E and an A in their initials and makes software about building cities and playing pro football and things like that ;) ).  They essentially make their customers pay to be beta testers and then continue to do the minimum to get the software working - until the following year's version, of course.  By contrast, Orbx products are always FINISHED - what bugs do get through at release are quickly fixed.  You have no packages with glaring deficiences that remain unresolved, and the customer service you provide to help fix individual problems is exceptional.  What problems I have had with installations or bugs have always been quickly and promptly addressed.  You guys are doing it the RIGHT WAY - and it should be applauded.  That's why I choose to spend my money with your company.

I applaud the spirit with which you and your employees and partners approach their job and the way you involve and communicate with your clients and customers.  It is clear you are committed to doing the right thing and you have your priorities straight.  Please keep doing what you are doing and I for one am looking forward to all of the exciting new products on the way this year.

Best Regards,

Kevin Jaeger

Hi JV,

Unlike some knowledgable people on this forum, I did not understand much of what you said. Maybe it's because I'm too old.

However I'm sure that whatever you and the team do, will be for the betterment of all us would be fliers.

Just love ORBX and the extra bits that you always do for us addicts is fantastic.

It's fabulous that you are working on a compromise version of lclookup.bgl. That's what I suggested months ago and was flamed for it. ;) In terms of autogen textures I think NA offers the best selection IMHO.

Thanks for the update JV.  As many others have said in this thread, your devotion to putting out a product when it is ready is more than worth the wait.  I also have to echo what Ripcord said above; it is pretty much unprecedented for a developer to not just keep their customers up to date on the progress of a project, but to do so in such depth is AMAZING.  Between the quality of ORBX products and the feeling of community that updates like this build and maintain, I for one could not be happier to be an ORBX customer!

John, I too feel the same as my friend Creekdog and would also say, take as much time as needed to get it right. Sandhills Air Cargo still has miles and miles of SAK Region to deliver cargo too and will keep us busy for many more weeks to come....lol..... I too am proud to be a ORBX customer. You have made our dream of an awesome flight simulator come true.......Cheers!!!

Thanks for the update, much appreciated.

Could you please clarify something for me that (for me) wasn't obvious from your post (sorry if it was in there but i'm very tired!)

Orbx England is the only Orbx product I have. I only fly in Europe currently. When I have FTXG as well as ORBX England, will I still need to do mid-flight "switching" between Europe and FSX Default, i.e. say I fly from UK to Austria. WIll I need to start in England with FTX EU enabled and then save flight and go back to FSX Default once out of England?

Thanks for the update John - far better the finished product is as polished as it can be under the circumstances and a brave decision too considering the delay in income.  I have to say that middle eastern city looks the absolute dogs!  It's about time a region so seriously neglected got a bit of life to it.  Scotland will be a shoe in onto my PC as well as FTXG.

Wondering this too.

I have England uninstalled as it messes up Europe. I can't fly NGX flights and I'm not going through the hassle of saving, switching and reloading flights.

They way JV explained it, sounds a bit like this issue isn't solved?

It reads to me as though this is in theory solved - but they have to go back and rebuild the FTX regions using the same technique that they used for NZ.  So in practice we are still not free from the FTX Central thing, at least not for a while.

Longer term we want to get rid of FTX Central altogether, or at least the need to switch autogen sets. How do we do this? A huge amount of work which will be in part funded by FTXG. We need to re-do the autogen for PNW and NA regions, Australia and the upcoming NCA. There will be a performance improvement as a result too, so we're keen to roll it out. Please give us some time to architect the best solution though, but it will happen.

There is no need to switch mid flight between London and Athens for example. All you need to does choose which autogen set to use before the flight, (Europe for England or Default for the EU continent). In this example I would set it to Default because the majority of the flight is over the EU mainland.

Thanks for the update on the pending releases.

Good to see Scotland is very close to release, plenty of scenic flying to do there.

So glad to hear that you are not releasing FTXG until it is ready, a pity some other producers could not do the same.

The detractors obviously don't know what they are on about. Jealousy is a curse.

A big thank you to your great team for working so hard to make our pastime so very enjoyable. Hard to imagine what simming would be like without ORBX products.

As it always is with a big post, it invariably raises more questions. I've been away from the office a few days so here are the answers below:

Wasn't it disclosed earlier that there are some add-on airports for SAK?

Any news on those or are these the ones you refered as " the many projects currently in development [you] don't want to lift the kimono too high just yet" :)

BTW: Great to see Norway coming!

Russ White is currently working on PAJN Juneau which will be on sale mid July. Alex Goff is scoping locations for his next airport in SAK, and I will keep Russ in SAK after PAJN, so clearly we are giving SAK some loving :)

I understand what the role of FTX Central plays. However I and I am sure many others once released will have *just* FTXG and no other Orbx scenery/regions. Will those users still need to select something within FTX Central? I plan on deleting out of FSX all GEX stuff and merely installing FTXG. From what I read above I am thinking not or just leaving FTX Central set on FTXG and never have to mess with it again? Also you added LC files that will come with FTXG (for SE Asia it appears), how will this integrate with UTX LC and FSGenesis LC? Now is not the time to ask but down the road I am still worried about extracting all the UTX stuff once OpenLC is released. I am having a feeling that a complete reinstall of FSX is going to be needed to avoid any UTX/OpenLC conflicts due to the cfg files that are changed with UTX.

If you have *only* FTXG then FTX Central plays a minimal role, mainly as the "hub" for all Orbx apps, user guides, control panels etc. We will still rely on a sub-component of FTX Central to correctly append new terrain.cfg entries to ensure we don't trample over for example, UTX's terrain.cfg stuff. So it will still be installed and set to "Default" but you would never have to run it again if you don't purchase any FTX Regions. However one would hope you would get a taste for Orbx textures and be tempted to go for the full-fat regions as well.

I had to register, so much looking forward to the FTXG release, even now, when it is moved a little bit away.

@John Venema: you asked for scenery addons where you might contact the developers or check further the compatibility. One addon which I will certainly continue to use even after the release of FTXG will be one, which I actually wonder that it was not mentioned so far:

Switzerland Professional X

It is both a mesh, landclass and texture total conversion of the whole country and I really hope, that installing FTXG won't affect this precious scenery at all.

Good point. Does anyone who has this product installed have issues with autogen disappearing when FTX England (FTX Central "Europe") is active? We have not had any reports about it which leads me to believe that they used default autogen buildings and trees for Swiss X.

Thanks for the info John I must say Im more then pleased with the Orbx Products that I have purchased and I know when FTX Global comes out that will be just as good.

I just wondered a few months ago you said that global was going to be in 2 half's I presume that is no longer the case?

No it's not the case now, I announced that the Plus Pack subscription option would not go ahead in my May announcement. Instead we will release smaller cheaper addons competitively priced so you can add a la carte options to FTXG without committing to an upfront payment. This also give you the control over what landclass, mesh or terrain products you wish to use with FTXG.

Really looking forward to this project.

One thing I have been wondering, and forgive me if it's been answered, will individual 'Regions' still be developed (like they have been historically) once FTX Global is released or will 'Global' become the base and specific areas within the overall Global framework be further enhanced with additional custom textures as per your comments regarding payware addons to this title?

I guess what I am asking, to take my favourite area for example (NZSI) ..... how does 'FSX default' versus 'FTX Global' versus 'FTX NZSI' compare as I assume 'NZSI' is another level above 'Global' ?

Final question is one day will you ever develop FTX Global Mesh?

I'll get me coat. :)

Cheers Dave

We have not stopped developing full featured FTX Regions nor do we intend to. Scotland is close to release, and Northern California production is in full swing, with more regions to come after that. FTXG is not a substitute for our regions and no where near as detailed. I'm pretty sure I've made that clear by now ;)

NZSI is much more detailed than FTX Global and you'd be foolish to accept what you get with FTXG for NZ when it's using mainly default landclass and no other enhancements like coastlines, vectors, traffic, airports etc.  You have to see FTXG as the "base" Orbx layer which is the no-frills, textures-only with the bonus of night lighting and new autogen.

We have no plans to make a world-wide mesh product; there are plenty of freeware and payware alternatives out there already and we don't see the need to produce anything else.

Hi John,

Thanks for the update. Very interested in this one.

Just a question though. Will the modification of the lclookup.bgl file enable you guys to finally show palm trees around Miami in stead of those alaska-looking pine trees in default FSX?

Kind regards,

Well default is default and I can't comment on why there are pine trees in Miami. I expect that USA Sub-tropical Urban landclass textures should feature palm trees. I'll make sure they do ok?
